Cho-Oyu Expedition From Kerung Autumn- (8,201m)

Mount Cho Oyu (8188m) was first conquered by Austrians in 1954 followed by The Indian and German in 1958 and 1964 respectively. In the Tibetan language, the meaning of Cho Oyu is "Turquoise goddess". Since 1998, our company "Monterosa Treks and Expedition" is also conducting an expedition of the mountains like, Everest, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Lhakpa-Ri and others from the Tibet side.

Meeting and climbing information: Our staffs of Monterosa welcome you at Tribhuvan International airport after your arrival. Then you will be escorted to the hotel. We organize an orientation program about the expedition with other climbing members & Expedition crews. Since then we work out processing your Tibet visa and other necessary documents for Cho Oyu Expedition.

After spending 3 days at Kathmandu, we drive you towards the Nepal-Tibet border up to the Friendship Bridge (Miteri Bridge) through Prithvi highway, Trisuli Highway, and finally Pashang Lamu highway. Spending one night at Sybrubesi we drive to Rasuwa Gadhi, Kerung Bridge. The Chinese liaison officer and Chinese transportation meet us there. The expedition gears are loaded on truck and we get into Land cruiser 4wd or with comfortable Minibus to drive towards Dzongkha (3000m). We spend one night at Dzongkha. Next day, we drive to Tingri (4340m) where we spend further two nights acclimatizing. Then, we drive from Tingri to Base camp (5000m) along the rough way with a jerking & bouncing experience through the grassy plain which leads up to the Chinese base camp.

We set up our camp at Chinese Base Camp and stay two nights or more as per our decision. We prepare yak schedules. From here, it takes two days to walk to reach Advance base camp (ABC). Mount Cho Oyu Summit ABC is in the heart of the Himalayas surrounded by ethereal peaks. There is also the high pass called Nangpa La nearby that serves as the main trading route between the Tibetans and the Khumbu’s Sherpa.

ABC is the main base camp and we plan to stay there for a longer duration also to look the favorable situation for our expedition. We provide tents to every climber but as we move on from ABC, you should bear all the services on your own. Walking on a vague path over a moraine-covered glacier for several hours we feel the real taste of mountaineering. Camp 1 is on some ridge at 6400m. The ridge is now soft and easy enough for climbing, then it broadens out and you should climb successive huge steps, several of which probably require fixing a rope in coordination with other expedition teams up there.

Camp 2 is on the edge of a large plateau at 7125m and you may attempt peak from here if you think you are prepared enough. Also, you may establish a light Camp 3 across the plateau and up on a minor ridge at 7550m.

You will start to approach the peak early in the morning from camp 3. Above the rock bands, the slopes are still steep and you may take a line to fix there, depending on conditions, however once on the crest of this ridge the terrain is straight forward along with a long haul to the summit plateau.

As you reach a top, the views of Mount Everest 8848m, Mount Lhotse 8501m, Mount Nuptse 7855m, Mount Chamlang 7319m, Mount Ama Dablam 6856m and other peaks of the Everest region to the east and south is amazing. To the west, there is the Mount Melungtse and Mount Gauri Sankar massifs and to the north, there is all Tibet area. We should follow the same normal route to descend to Camp 2 and continue down to the ABC. In this way, we kiss the top of Mount Cho Oyu.
