Lhotse Expedition Spring- (8,516m)

Mount Lhotse; Mount Lhotse was climbed by a Swiss expedition team in 1956. Its lower peak, mount Lhotse Shar (8383m) is also considered a separate peak of 8000m sometimes. Mount Lhotse literally means "South Peak" is a part of the Everest massif, just to the south of Everest. The primary route to reach mount Lhotse is via Everest's South Col. Despite the increasing activities on Mount Everest; Lhotse was still the highest untouched peak in the world in 1955. An international team in 1955 attempted to climb Mount Lhotse for the first time.

One member of the party was Erwin Schneider who began to work on the first of the series of high-quality "Schneider maps of the Everest region" during this expedition. The same Swiss party who made the second ascent of Everest in 1956 made the first ascent of mount Lhotse from the camp just below the South Col. Mount Lhotse Shar was first successfully conquered by an Austrian expedition in 1970. Later Japanese, South Koreans, and Germans attempted from various other routes. Some Polish and Italians also climbed the summit before German expeditions reached the summit in 1977.
